Keyword Search for Everything:

When searching the internet looking for data science resources be sure to always include the specific technology you are using or needing help with in your search phrase. For example, if you need to understand a python panda’s series, make sure you include "pandas" in your search. Here are some examples:

  1. "yellowbrick" sklearn ValueError
  2. How do I create a "numpy" array
  3. Where can I upload my "tableau" "shiny" "plotly" dashboard

Tips for using Google Search more effectively

  1. Use the tabs
    • The first tip is to use the tabs in Google search. On the top of every search are a number of tabs.
  2. Use quotes
    • how do I find "shiny" apps
  3. Use a hyphen to exclude words
    • Mustang -cars
  4. Use a colon to search specific sites
    • climate visualization:tableau.com
  5. Find a page that links to another page
    • link:nytimes.com
  6. Use the asterisk wildcard
    • “data * business finance”
  7. Find sites that are similar to other sites
    • related:amazon.com
  8. Use Google search to do math
    • 8 * 5 + 5 or Planck’s Constant
  9. Search for multiple words at once
    • “Best ways to prepare for a job interview” OR “How to prepare for a job interview”
  10. (*Protip) Use words that websites would use
    • “I have a flat tire” could be replaced by “repair a flat tire.”
    • “My head hurts” could be replaced by “headache relief.”
